While helping people and societies, the present world puts several challenges in front of social workers. The challenges differ according to the role or setting. Misunderstanding the role of social worker is a common flaw and trend which never allows social worker to use his or her potentials fully in the man making. Unpredictable work schedules due to limited number of professional social workers and continuous expose to highly emotional situations cause stress on social workers and may lead to emotional exhaustion. Challenging clients are very common in the materialistic world which creates barriers in front of social workers in their journey to find causes for the actual problems.
Contemporary world expects qualified and experienced social workers. A social workers or practitioner should be same as the Chinese Bamboo tree. The remarkable thing about Chinese Bamboo is that it takes five years for it to emerge from ground. During this long five years, it strengthens and spreads its roots under the soil to protect it from strong waves and unpredicted winds. When the roots are strong enough, the plant emerge from the ground, start to grow and reaches almost ninety feet tall in about a month.
Social workers must grow and spread their roots of knowledge, skills and experience in different environments during the tenure of their education to achieve the qualities of this meaningful profession. Utilization of field works, workshops, internships, community camps as well as mentality to make changes based on guidance of faulty supervisor and professors with vision will pave the path to become a true social worker. “Never miss a chance to grow and to help others grow as well as always say yes to opportunities even it is challenging”.
